SMALL KIDS: SETTING A WORLD RECORD OF CHILDREN READING TOGETHER

The Junior League of Greater Covington Presents Jumpstart's Read for the Record 4th Annual Event on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Koop Drive Kids Konnection Playground

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record brings national attention to the importance of preparing our children to read at an early age by organizing the world’s largest shared reading experience.  Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign, and intensive early education program, puts books in the homes of children who need them most and focuses on helping them make gains in crucial language and literacy skills.

Jumpstart's Read for the Record 2010 has the forecast pointing to snow!  This year’s official Campaign book is The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.

On October 7, 2010, hundreds of thousands of people around the world will open Ezra Jack Keats’ book, The Snowy Day and read aloud to children in their communities. Pledge your time to share this tale with a child in your life, and together we’ll set a new record for the world’s largest shared reading experience - ever!

For the 2009 Jumpstart Read for the Record Event, The JLGC coordinated 11,698 children in 45 different schools in St. Tammany Parish, LA to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, with 821 children reading at the event (1,046 people attending) held at the Koop Drive Kids Konnection Playground.  At our FREE community event participants were treated to a variety of fun and educational activities including: special appearances by the Honeybees Dance team and Mascot Hugo, Audubon Nature Institute Bug Mobile, New Orleans Saints Experience including inflatable slide and tackling dummy, various crafts, face painting, and more. Several organizations, including the Hornets Bookmobile, gave away free books to all participants.  During the event, The Very Hungry Caterpillar was read to the children, by several people, including, Bob Licht with Hugo, Curios George and representatives from WYES, and Jill Lane as Granny Gertie.  Papillion provided musical entertainment that had the children dancing and singing.
