28 Oct Museum Without Walls
In 2004, the Junior League of Greater Covington initiated talks with St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis to build a Children’s Museum in St. Tammany. The meetings were very positive and JLGC received full support from parish officials to begin research and planning. The League joined the Association of Children’s Museum, the leading national organization for museum operations, and continued research on programming, exhibits, management and funding.
A JLGC initiative was formed to bring the Children’s Museum concept to our area. A “Museum Without Walls”, a traveling educational program, was developed and implemented by Junior League volunteers to bring creative learning into the St. Tammany Parish Schools. This program played an important role in the aftermath of Katrina. JLGC member volunteers brought the Museum Without Walls to shelters across the Parish to assist with the children and families who were being cared for after the storm. Since then, the Museum Without Walls has reached more than 1,000 elementary students in the St. Tammany Parish School System.
The community support for this project is tremendous. The Junior League knows the positive impact that Children’s Museums have on communities and is certain that the League’s mission of community outreach will be limitless through this endeavor.
